Paavo Nurmi was a Finnish runner who competed in the Olympics in the early 20th century. He is most famous for his nine gold medals and his world records in middle- and long-distance running. Nurmi was born on June 13, 1897, in Turku, Finland. He grew up in a family of seven children, and his parents were both farmers. He was a natural athlete as a child and was already running competitively at the age of 17. He began competing in long-distance races and quickly made a name for himself in the world of athletics.

Nurmi set numerous world records during his career, including the 3000-meter steeplechase, the 5000-meter, and the 10,000-meter. He also set a world record for the mile, which stood for over 10 years. In 1920, he competed in the Olympic games in Antwerp, Belgium, and won three gold medals. He also won three gold medals in the 1924 Olympics in Paris. In total, he won nine Olympic gold medals, a record only surpassed by American swimmer Michael Phelps in 2008.

In addition to his success in the Olympics, Nurmi was also a successful marathon runner, winning the Boston Marathon in 1924. He was also a successful business man, owning a sporting goods store in Helsinki. Nurmi also had a successful career in politics, becoming a member of the Finnish Parliament in 1929.

Nurmi's dominance in middle- and long-distance running began to decline in the late 1920s due to the emergence of other great athletes. He retired from competitive running in 1934, but continued to be involved in the sport, coaching and giving lectures. He died on October 2, 1973, in Helsinki.
