Description
Letter signed, 1 1/4 pages (both sides), 7,25 x 9,25 inch, Berlin, 3.11.1806 (soon after the fortress of Küstrin had been taken & about one week after Napoleon`s triumphant arrival in Berlin), in French, important letter to Marshal Davout (1770-1823) - concerning military affairs, signed (as Emperor) in black ink "Napol", with mild intersecting letter folds - in fine to very fine condition.
Napol"
Translated:
"Cousin, do not consume Küstrin's siege supplies. These supplies are very difficult to make, and Küstrin is a place in the front line; on the contrary, take all your care to preserve them. Continue to draw your subsistence from Frankfurt & Landsberg. I give orders that all that belongs to your army corps, which would be in the depots of Erfurt, Wittenberg, Spandau and other depots in the rear, befall to Küstrin. If you think that it is appropriate, you can send a good infantry division to Landsberg. Beaumont's division arrived today; I will let it rest for two days; immediately afterwards I will send it to you. The corps commanded by Prince Jerome will be assembled on the 4th at Crossen and will thus support your right flank; he will undertake to cover you against anything that might come out of Silesia. He has more than three thousand cavalry men, Bavarians and Wurtembergers. Whereupon I pray to God that he keeps you in his holy and worthy protection. In Berlin on November 3, 1806 at five o'clock in the morning.
