Mobutu Sese Seko was born Joseph-Désiré Mobutu on October 14, 1930, in Lisala, Belgian Congo. He was a Congolese military officer and politician who ruled the country for over 30 years as its President. Mobutu rose to power through a military coup in 1965 and remained in power until 1997.

During his reign, Mobutu established a one-party state and created a cult of personality around himself. He changed his name to Mobutu Sese Seko and promoted a policy of Africanizing the country's culture and economy. Under his rule, the country was renamed Zaire in 1971.

Mobutu's regime was characterized by widespread corruption, human rights abuses, and a deteriorating economy. Despite this, he maintained support from Western powers due to his anti-communist stance during the Cold War. However, his popularity waned in the 1990s as the country plunged into civil war and economic crisis.

In 1997, Mobutu was overthrown by rebel forces led by Laurent Kabila. He fled the country and sought refuge in Morocco, where he died of prostate cancer in 1997. Mobutu's legacy remains controversial, with some viewing him as a symbol of African autocracy and others as a product of the Cold War era.
