Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske on September 16, 1924, in New York City. She was the only child of Natalie Weinstein Bacal, a Romanian-Jewish immigrant, and William Perske, an American-born Jewish father. Bacall was raised in a Jewish home and attended school in the Bronx, New York. She received her first acting lessons from her mother, who was an amateur actress.
Her big break came in 1944 when she was spotted by the famous director Howard Hawks, who cast her opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not. The chemistry between the two was instant, and they married in 1945. The couple had two children, Stephen and Leslie. Together, they starred in four more films: The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, Key Largo, and Designing Woman.
Bacall continued to act in the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in such films as How to Marry a Millionaire, The Gift of Love, and Sex and the Single Girl. She also worked on Broadway, receiving two Tony Awards for her performances in Applause and Woman of the Year. She also appeared in a variety of television shows and commercials throughout her career.
In 1997, Bacall received an honorary Oscar for her lifetime of achievement. She was also the recipient of numerous other awards, including the Kennedy Center Honor in 1997, the National Medal of Arts in 2009, and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2010. In addition to her acting accomplishments, Bacall was also an accomplished singer and author. She published two memoirs, Lauren Bacall By Myself and Now, and penned her first novel, By Myself and Then Some.
Bacall passed away at the age of 89 on August 12, 2014, in New York City. She left behind a lasting legacy in the world of film and theater, having starred in some of the most iconic films of all time. She was a beloved figure in Hollywood, and her influence can still be felt today.
