Buchanan, James

Autograph letter signed, one page (blind stamped), 5,75 x 7 inch, Washington, 1.09.1858, to the three man Committee of Invitation of the `Kentucky State Agricultural Society` - with 9 lines of the explanation for his regret crossed out, written and signed in black ink "James Buchanan", attractively mounted (removable) for display with a portrait picture of James Buchanan (altogether 11,75 x 8,25 inch), with mild intersecting letter folds and a few small stains - in fine condition. Comes from the papers of John Adam Glossbrenner who served as Sergeant at Arms in the House from 1850 to 1860 and as Buchanan`s private secretary from 1860 to 1861.

"Gentlemen,
I have been honored by your invitation of `the Directors of the Kentucky State Agricultural Society`, to attend their approaching fair at Louisville."
[He then crossed out much of his explanation for his inability to attend citing]
"I regret that the pressure of public business renders it impossible for me to accept it because I should esteem it both a pleasure & a privilege to be present on this interesting occasion.
