Typed letter signed, one page, 5,75 x 7,75 inch, (Montagnola), January 1955, in German, reply letter to Maria Bulcke - Hesse remembers a stay in Essen and writes about his state of health, signed in dark ink "H. Hesse" - Hesse has made several notations and corrections in his hand, attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows Hermann Hesse in a chest-up portrait (altogether 11,75 x 8,25 inch), with a central vertical letter fold and very mild signs of wear - in fine to very fine condition.

Ich war in Essen nur jenes eine mal im Leben. Da erinnere ich mich eines lieben hübschen Knaben - ob das der im Kriege Umgekommene gewesen ist? Ach, es wäre viel zu sagen und zu fragen, aber leider kann ich kaum mehr einen richtigen Brief schreiben; die Augen, die Hände und der Kopf weigern sich, und die tägliche Ueberbürdung ist gross. Darum habe ich in den letzten Jahren, jedes Mal unter langandauernden grossen Mühen, zuweilen einen Rundbrief geschrieben und druckien lassen, als Ersatz. So schicke ich auch Ihnen als Gegengabe für Ihren lieben Brief eine kleine Drucksache zu. Schön, dass Sie malen! Das ist eine der wohltuendsten Beschäftigungen, die es gibt!
