Ennio Morricone was born in Rome, Italy, on November 10, 1928. He was the son of a pianist and a violinist, and began studying music at a young age. In addition to his film work, Morricone has also composed music for the stage, including the opera Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) in 1966 and the ballet Dracula in 1972. He has also written music for numerous commercials and television shows. He has also written several classical pieces, including the Requiem for the Victims of Mafia (2006) and the Mass for Pope John Paul II (2005). He has also written music for the video game Red Dead Redemption (2010).

Morricone has been honored with numerous awards throughout his career, including an Honorary Academy Award in 2007. He has also been nominated for five Academy Awards, including one for Best Original Score for The Mission (1986).
