Emerson, Lake & Palmer, or ELP as they were more commonly known, were a British progressive rock band which formed in 1970. The band consisted of Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on bass and vocals, and Carl Palmer on drums and percussion.
The band is best known for their ambitious and complex compositions and their energetic and powerful live performances. They were one of the most popular and influential progressive rock bands of the 1970s and are often cited as one of the most influential bands of all time.
The band released 8 studio albums between 1970 and 1994, and were at the forefront of the progressive rock movement. Their most successful album, Brain Salad Surgery, was released in 1973 and included the hit single, “Karn Evil 9.” The album was the band’s highest charting album in the UK, reaching number 2 on the UK albums chart.
The band was also well known for their ambitious and complex live shows. ELP toured extensively throughout the 1970s and played some of the largest venues in the world. They were known for their extravagant stage shows which often featured laser and lighting effects, and a giant Hammond organ which was played by Keith Emerson.
In the late 1970s, the band began to experience creative and commercial difficulties, and they disbanded in 1979. The band reunited for a series of successful tours in the early 1990s, and released their last studio album, In the Hot Seat, in 1994.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, in recognition of their contribution to progressive rock. The band has sold over 30 million albums worldwide and are regarded as one of the most influential progressive rock bands of all time.
