Pélissier", with intersecting letter folds and scattered mild creases - in fine condition. A. Pélissier."
Translated: "Mr. President of the Protestant Consistory, The named Richer you sent me the request was in fact brought to Algiers by the steamship which bore me. This man has been sentenced to death for assault to his superior. But some mitigating circumstances pleaded in his favor. The head of state [President Louis Napoléon Bonaparte] reduced in his favor the severity of the Law ; he changed the sentence to seven years jail, and Richer was taken here for the endorsement of his letters of thanks. That was all that could be done in his favor this time. But if Richer is filled with feelings of honor and regret he expressed in his letter, he will by his conduct Cherchell workshop deserve the duration of his sentence shortened. It was from him that it depends. There to reach this new favor, a time of trial to undergo, and legal terms to observe. Military discipline needs guarantees. I do not have the power to make exceptions to it. Please, Mr. Pastor, with the spirit of charity and order that drives you to understand his situation to that unfortunate young man and encourage him in his good resolutions. My good will gained him if he shows consistency. Please keep in the feelings and memories of family, but at the same time prevent his engaging in unrealistic illusions. Any fault must have its expiation. It does not depend on me to change anything to the provisions of the Law. Please accept, Mr. President of the Protestant Consistory, the assurance of my highest consideration. Major General Governor General of Algeria, acting. A. Pelissier. "
