Karl Dönitz was a German naval leader and the last President of Germany during the Third Reich. He was born on 16 September 1891 in Grünau, Germany. He was the son of a Prussian lawyer, and he had a brother and a sister. Dönitz was educated at the Naval Cadet School in Großenbrode, where he graduated with honours. He then attended the Naval Academy in Kiel, and in 1911, he was commissioned as a midshipman.

Dönitz served during World War I and was awarded the Iron Cross First and Second Class for bravery. After the war, he continued his naval career, rising rapidly through the ranks. In 1935, he was promoted to Grand Admiral and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy. As the head of the German Navy, Dönitz was responsible for the U-boat campaign and the Battle of the Atlantic against the Allied forces. When Adolf Hitler committed suicide in 1945, Dönitz was appointed as his successor as the President of Germany.
