The Napoleonic Wars of the early nineteenth century tore the Denmark-Norway union out of a peaceful period that had lasted since 1720. The continental blockade of England, which was against Danish interests, was a catastrophe to Norway. The consequences were isolation, economic crises, and hunger. Consequently, leading groups in Norway were convinced that they needed a political representation of their own, which led to Norwegian independence in 1814; Danish hopes of reunion were thus lost. Up until this time, Denmark-Norway remained an ally of Napoleon, but the wars proved a national catastrophe for Denmark, both economically and politically. The policy of armed neutrality had failed, and the fleet had been destroyed or surrendered. Trade had been hard-hit by the blockade, and the widespread overseas connections that formerly had played so large a part in the economic life of Denmark could not be resumed. Inflation also contributed to the crisis. An economic turn for the better did not occur till about 1830. During this period, from 1808 So 1839, Denmark was ruled by Frederick VI, whose government was a patriarchal autocracy. In the Privy Council, which was regularly convened after 1814, Poul Christian Stemann became the leading figure who championed absolute monarchy against a rising tide of liberal reform.
