Eucken, Rudolf

Ten autograph letters (one of them on a postcard and one on a card) signed, in total 34 pages, mostly 5,25 x 7 inch (conjoined sheets), therefrom: eight from Boston (Mass.) & one from New York & one from Jena (Germany), 1907 - 1913, in German, to his translator Margaret von Seydewitz in Jena - these exceptional letters contain personal informations on his scientific lectures (mostly about ethics) and his life in America, written and signed in dark ink "R. Eucken", mostly with central horizontal mailing folds and very mild signs of wear - overall in fine to very fine condition. Accompanied by two original envelops and one postcard photograph (unsigned). A transcription of all letters is available on request.

Verehrtes und liebes Fräulein! Heute melde ich vor allem das richtige Eintreffen sowohl Ihres Briefes als der beiden Vorträge (Kant u. Philosophy und Religion); herzlichsten Dank für beides, im besondern auch
für die wertvollen Anregungen und Bemerkungen zu den einzelnen Vorträgen. Sie leisten mir dadurch eine sehr erfreuliche Hilfe, die ich aufs dankbarste zu schätzen weiß. Ich konnte bei großer Geschäftigkeit heute die neuen Vorträge noch nicht lesen, aber ich zweifle nicht im mindesten, daß sie ebenso vorzüglich ausgefallen sind wie die beiden

früheren. In den nächsten Tagen kann ich nun auch beginnen mich im lauten Lesen tüchtig zu üben, ich muß um so eher damit beginnen, da Weihnachten für uns recht unruhig werden wird. Einladungen über Einladungen, die interessanteste ist zu einem kleinen Kreise, wo ich Roosevelt werden kennen lernen. Wilson werde ich voraussichtlich in New York kennen lernen. So gewinnt man hier sehr interessante Eindrücke. Sehr leid war es mir von dem traurigen Unfall zu hören, der auch Ihnen so viel Sorge und Mühe machte und Ihnen auch so viel Zeit kostete. Es ist

wirklich bewunderungswürdig, daß Sie trotzdem noch die Kraft und die Ruhe fanden die wissenschaftliche Arbeit fortzuführen. Erfreulich war es uns dagegen zu hören, daß es Ihrer lieben Frau Mutter und Frau Dr. Schnetger besser geht. Die ethischen Vorträge sind insofern nicht so eilig, als ich sie ja erst am 20. Februar zu beginnen brauche und zu ihnen auch nicht so viel Vorbereitung im Lesen gebrauche, da ich doch immer mehr in das Englische hineinkomme. Geschichte der deutschen Philosophie finden so warme Teilnahme, daß von allen Seiten auf eine Veröffentlichung in Englisch gedrungen wird; so habe ich den Plan eine German philosophy for English readers zu schreiben, wahrscheinlich erst Winter 13/14. Außerdem muß eine revidierte Ausgabe der engl. Lebensanschauungen (the problem of human life) erscheinen, die ich, wenn der Verleger (Scribners) zustimmt, am liebsten in Jena hergestellt sähe. Auch das wird kaum rasch geschehen, aber schon jetzt möchte ich den Wunsch und die Hoffnung aussprechen, daß Sie mir auch bei dieser neuen Aufgabe Ihre gütige und förderliche Hilfe leihen möchten...."

It is truly admirable that you still found the strength and the calm to continue the scientific work. We were pleased, however, to hear that your dear wife, mother and wife, dr. Schnetger is doing better. The history of German philosophy is so warmly attended that a publication in English is demanded from all sides; so I have the plan to write a German philosophy for English readers, probably only in winter 13/14. In addition, a revised edition of the Engl. Life-views (the problem of human life) appear, which, if the publisher (Scribners) agrees, I would prefer to see them made in Jena. That, too, will hardly happen soon, but I would like to express the wish and the hope that you would like to lend me your benevolent and helpful help in this new task..."
