Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in the village of Mvezo in South Africa. He grew up in the small village of Qunu and was the son of a local chief.
As a young man, Mandela became involved in the anti-apartheid movement, a system of racial segregation that oppressed and discriminated against black South Africans. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) and became one of its most prominent leaders.
In 1964, Mandela was arrested and sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in anti-apartheid activities. He spent 27 years behind bars, during which time he became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and justice in South Africa.
In 1990, Mandela was released from prison after years of international pressure and negotiations. He went on to lead the ANC and become the first black president of South Africa in 1994.
During his presidency, Mandela worked to dismantle the institutionalized racism of apartheid and promote reconciliation among the country's diverse population. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his efforts.
After leaving office in 1999, Mandela remained a global advocate for peace, human rights, and social justice until his death in 2013. He is remembered as a hero and an inspiration to millions around the world.
