Martyn Jerel Buchwald is an American lawyer, judge, and former professor of law. He has served on the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Washington since 2006. Buchwald was born in New York City on November 19, 1944. He attended Harvard University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and his Juris Doctor in 1970. After graduating, he served as a law clerk for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit for a year before entering private practice in 1971.

In 1977, Buchwald was appointed a professor at the University of Washington School of Law. He served in this capacity until 1989 when he was appointed a judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. He held the position until 1998, when he was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. He was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate and took office on June 11, 1998.

Judge Buchwald is a respected jurist with a wide-ranging and comprehensive understanding of the law. During his time on the bench, he has presided over numerous civil and criminal cases involving a range of legal issues, including intellectual property, international trade, civil rights, and environmental law. He has also presided over some of the most complex and significant cases in the nation, including the Microsoft antitrust case and the Apple iPod antitrust case.

In addition to his judicial duties, Judge Buchwald is an active member of the legal community. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, and is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Washington School of Law and Seattle University School of Law.

Judge Buchwald has received numerous awards and honors for his service, including the Outstanding Jurist Award from the Washington State Bar Association and the Harold Leventhal Award from the Federal Bar Association. He was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. In 2012, he was appointed to the American Law Institute and is currently a member of the Institute's Council.
