Lorne Greene was a Canadian actor, radio personality, and singer. He was best known for his roles on the television series Bonanza and Battlestar Galactica. Greene was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1915 and he was the son of Russian immigrants. He attended Queen's University and graduated with a degree in chemistry. After graduation, he worked as a radio announcer for various stations in Ontario before moving to Hollywood in the late 1940s.

Greene began his acting career on the Broadway stage, appearing in such productions as The Prescott Proposals and The Silver Whistle. He made his film debut in 1952 in the movie The Silver Chalice. His big break came in 1959 when he was cast as Ben Cartwright on the television series Bonanza. He remained with the show until its cancellation in 1972. His role as Cartwright earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and he was also voted by viewers as their favorite television father.

In 1978, Greene was cast in the role of Commander Adama in the science fiction series Battlestar Galactica. His performance in the series earned him a Saturn Award for Best Actor. Greene also had a successful recording career, releasing several albums and having three Top 40 hits with “Ringo”, “The Man”, and “The Bad Times are Over”. He was also an accomplished author, penning several books including his autobiography, The Life and Times of Lorne Greene.

Greene married three times and had three children. He was an active environmentalist and supported the Canadian Wilderness Society and the World Wildlife Fund. He was also an honorary president of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and was awarded the Order of Canada in 1971. Greene passed away in 1987 at the age of 72.
