Description

Letter signed, one page, 8,25 x 9,5 inch, (Paris), 7.04.1853, `Maison de L`Empereur` stationery, in French, reply letter to "Colonel" - concerning the gift of a lead bullet found in Napoleon I's clothing after the Battle of Düren, signed by Maréchal Vaillant in dark ink "Vaillant", with soiling, two pinholes to the edges, and a very small area of paper loss to the upper edge a few light folds - in fine condition.

In parts:

Translated:
"In your letter of March 21st, you expressed the desire to present to His Majesty an iron bullet found in the clothing of Napoleon I after the Battle of Dresden.
The Emperor, unable to accept, has instructed me to convey to you his thanks and regrets.
The reasons for this refusal are in no way personal to you, I hasten to add. They are based on a general measure, necessitated by the sheer number of various objects offered to the Emperor, which has become too great to accept in its entirety.
Allow me to add, on my own behalf, that the projectile in question is a glorious title for your family, who should cherish it, as it so powerfully recalls the honorable part you played in one of the brilliant military episodes of a forever memorable era. [...]"
