After graduating from high school in 1933, she enrolled in the Royal Dramatic Theatre School in Stockholm.

Her performance in The Saga of Gösta Berling earned her a Best Actress award at the 25th Annual Academy Awards. In 1935, Ingrid moved to the United States and began acting in Hollywood films. Her first major role was in Intermezzo: A Love Story (1939), opposite Leslie Howard, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She then starred in Casablanca (1942), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), Gaslight (1944), and The Bells of St. Mary's (1945), for which she won her first Academy Award for Best Actress.
