Description

Autograph letter signed, one page, 8 x 10,5 inch, Oaxaca (Mexico), 31.01.1925, to the British vice-consul Constantine Rickards in Mexico City - D. H. Lawrence announces his departure*, written and signed in dark ink "D. H. Lawrence", attractively mounted (removable) with a photograph, shows D. H. Lawrence in a close-up portrait (altogether 16,5 x 11,75 inch), with intersecting letter folds, and mild browning - in fine to very fine condition.

In parts:
"... We leave here next week - arrive in Mexico City about Thursday, I suppose. Then look for a ship. - I wish there was such a thing in the world as a good Cargo boat that might take my wife & me & loiter with us to Yucatan or Jamaica or somewhere. I`m not very anxious to arrive in England till spring comes. - But I suppose nice Cargo boats have disappeared off the face of the waters. Do you know anything about them? All very quiet in Oaxaca: Very pleasant: But I feel now like moving again. Would like to smell the sea, too ..."

* D. Lawrence and his wife Frieda (nee von Richthofen) arrived in Oaxaca on November 9, 1924 in Oaxaca, about 400 km south of Mexico City. They traveled by train from Taos, New Mexico (where Lawrence had been a guest of Mabel Dodge Luhan for 3 years) via Mexico City. In Oaxaca they moved into a room in the Hotel Francia near the Plaza. The tuberculosis sufferer liked to spend the winter in the mild Mexican climate, and he appreciated the original character of Oaxaca. Here he wrote the final version of `The Plumed Serpent`, a novel playing in Mexico, as well as his travel book `Mornings in Mexico`. In January 1925, Lawrence became seriously ill, forcing him to continue and return.
