Chen-Ning Yang is a Chinese-American physicist who was born on October 1, 1922, in Hefei, China. He is best known for his work in particle physics and quantum field theory. Yang received his undergraduate education at the National Central University in Nanjing and later earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1948.
After completing his studies, Yang worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton before joining the faculty at the University of Chicago. In 1966, he moved to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he served as a professor until his retirement in 1999.
Yang is perhaps most famous for his collaboration with Tsung-Dao Lee on the discovery of the violation of the parity law in weak nuclear interactions. This groundbreaking work earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957, making them the first Chinese Nobel laureates in the field of science.
In addition to his research in particle physics, Yang has also made significant contributions to the field of statistical mechanics. He has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Albert Einstein Award in 1957 and the Medal of Science in 1986.
