"[...] you will fulfill my wishes if you can hire Ms. Masson as singer, wife of my excellent friend Ernest Masson of the Société des Concerts. You know that Gounod took her to sing Mors et Vita* in Paris [...]"

* `Mors et vita` is an oratorio in three parts by Charles Gounod premiered at the Birmingham Festival in 1885. It was conceived as a sequel to `La rédemption` (1882). He also studied under notable figures such as Franz Liszt and Charles-Valentin Alkan.

He was able to compose in a variety of genres, from operas to symphonies to chamber music. His first opera, Le Timbre d’argent, was premiered in 1877.
