Banerjee completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Calcutta, followed by a master's degree in economics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
After completing his master's degree, Banerjee moved to the United States to pursue higher studies. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1988.
