What this example shows

This vintage sepia-toned portrait of Charlie Chaplin has sometimes been offered as an authentically signed photograph. The inscription and the Charlie Chaplin signature visible on the image, however, are part of the photographic reproduction and were not written onto this individual print by hand. The photographer's signature is reproduced in the same way.

Collector's note

A printed signature can look convincing when it follows the tonal range and ageing of an old photograph. Examine the signature area under magnification and compare its surface, colour and edge structure with the surrounding photographic image. Genuine ink normally sits differently on the surface and may show variation in flow, pressure or colour. These observations must always be considered together with the complete object.

Why this matters

The photograph itself is a legitimate period image. The problem arises when a mechanically reproduced inscription is described and priced as an original handwritten autograph. This reference is intended to help collectors distinguish those two categories.
