He continued his studies at the Institute for Theoretical Physics under his father's direction. In 1949, he received his PhD from the University of Copenhagen.

Aage Bohr's work focused on the structure of atomic nuclei and the forces that bind them together. He developed a model of nuclear structure that was based on the concept of the "collective model," which he first proposed in 1955. He also developed a mathematical technique for calculating the energies of nuclear particles and demonstrated the importance of the Pauli exclusion principle in nuclear physics.
