(1871-1922) French novelist, critic, and essayist who wrote the monumental novel In Search of Lost Time (À la recherche du temps perdu; with the previous English title translation of Remembrance of Things Past), originally published in French in seven volumes between 1913 and 1927. He is considered by critics and writers to be one of the most influential authors of the 20th century.
Autograph letter signed, 2 1/2 pages - on two conjoined sheet (both sides), 4,25 x 6,5 inch, Paris, , in French, to "Monsieur le Directeur" - concerning a share purchase, written and signed in black ink "Marcel Proust", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows Proust seated in a chair (altogether 11,75 x 16,5 inch), with letter folds, a few small stains, and scattered mild signs of wear - in fine condition.
"M. Nahmias*, whom I take the liberty of sending to you, has convinced me to buy a thousand Spassyz-Pappel on the conditions which he will explain to you if you are kind enough to receive it. Being worse than ignorant of the correct language of the stock market myself, I wouldn't know how to do it. I believe it will be simpler if the transaction takes place through Crédit Industriel. In any case, since time is short and I will not be here tomorrow, I send you herewith the drafts to keep in case they are necessary [to cover the amount of this purchase]”. He adds in a postscript: “It is preferable to carry out this operation tomorrow, on the stock market on Monday. (Today when you have the word)”
* In his letter, Proust mentions M. Nahmias, whom he employs as secretary. However, Albert Nahmias did not only fulfill the functions of secretary, typing Proust's manuscripts.
Instead, he bet and speculated on the stock market on behalf of Proust with absolute confidence, who had romantic feelings for him. In fact, Proust was so in love with Nahmias that he wrote to him: "Why can't I change sex, face and age, take on the appearance of a young and pretty woman to kiss you with all my heart?" (White, `Marcel Proust: Une vie`).
