Typed letter signed, two pages, 8,5 x 11 inch, personal letterhead, 2.02.1993, to fellow Oscar winner Karl Malden - concerning the receive of honors, the Menninger Foundation* and his friendship to Mulden, signed in blue ink "Marlon", with tacker holes to the upper left corners, and punched holes to the left edges - in fine condition.

"I'm in a dilemma. Although I don't believe in formally giving or receiving honors, I have much respect for the Menninger Foundation because of the contributions they have made to our society and indirectly to me personally through the extraordinary talents of Dr. George Harrington. You have been my friend for 43 years. I have come to respect you and to have a deep appreciation not only for your unparalleled abilities as an actor but also for your dedication to friendship. I love you and I honor you Karl. You have been a truly good friend to me in hard times and fair times. I do not want you to think that I'm oblivious or uncaring about the expression of appreciation that the Menninger Foundation is extending to you this night but since I cannot accept the ritual of being a participant of collective ceremonial accolades and I do not wish to be associated with it, I cannot be there with you tonight…There is something absurd and too often ostentatious about such occasions…I send my love to you and Mona and the children and wish you well in this moment of triumph...

* Karl Malden was a member of the Board of Directors of the Menninger Foundation, who honored him with their Medal for Achievement in Mental Health in 1993; among those in attendance at the event were Kirk Douglas, Robert Wise, and Arthur Hiller, as well as Eva Marie Saint, who starred alongside Brando and Malden in the 1954 classic On the Waterfront.
