Autograph letter signed, one page, 5,25 x 7,5 inch, Paris, 10.03.1840, in French, to Roy Renard (former deputy to the town hall of Beaucaire) - concerning poetry, written and signed in black ink "Victor Hugo", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a portrait picture of Hugo (altogether 11,75 x 8,25 inch), with intersecting letter folds and mild soiling - in fine condition.
"Je vous remercie monsieur de vos beaux vers. Je ne suis qu`un passant mais un passant qui ecoute avec joie la voix des poesies. Vous êtes dans le pays de la poésie. Vous avez le soleil dans votre coeur et la muse dans votre esprit.
Je suis bien touché des sentiments que vous m`exprimez, avec tant d`âme et de talent. Rezevez, monsieur, l`assurance de mes sentiments distingués.

"I thank you sir for your beautiful verses. I am only a passerby, but a passerby who listens with joy to the voice of poetry. You are in the land of poetry. You have the sun in your heart and the muse in your mind.
