Tigran Petrosian was a Soviet chess Grandmaster who was born on June 17, 1929, in Tbilisi, Georgia. He became the ninth World Chess Champion in 1963 and held the title for six years until 1969. Known for his defensive style and mastery of positional play, Petrosian was a highly respected competitor in the chess world. He was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1952 and was named a Soviet National Master of Sport in 1963. Petrosian passed away on August 13, 1984.

Viktor Korchnoi, born on March 23, 1931, in Leningrad, Russia, was a Soviet and Swiss chess Grandmaster. Known for his fierce rivalry with Anatoly Karpov, Korchnoi was one of the strongest players in the world during the 1970s and 1980s. He participated in four World Chess Championship matches and was a two-time Candidates Tournament winner. Korchnoi was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1956 and remained an active player until his death on June 6, 2016, in Wohlen, Switzerland.
