Prince Karl Theodor of Bavaria

Autograph letter signed, one page - on black-bordered mourning stationery, 4,5 x 7 inch, Prince Carl Palace in Munich (`Pavillon Royal`), 1.04.1838, in German, to his brother King Ludwig I of Bavaria (1786-1868) - Prince Karl Theodor of Bavaria declines his participation in events because of a bereavement*, written and signed in black ink "Carl", with a central horizontal letter fold, and scattered very mild signs of wear - in fine to very fine condition. Accompanied by the original envelope (addressed by Prince Karl Theodor of Bavaria).

"Meine tiefe Trauer, die ich nicht allein äußerlich trage, sondern noch mehr in meinem Innersten schmerzlich empfinde, gestattet mir nicht den kirchlichen Feierlichkeiten bei Hofe während der Charwoche beyzuwohnen, noch weniger am Ostersonntag zu erscheinen. Ich ersuche Dich daher mich hiervon entbinden zu wollen, ebenso von dem bevorstehenden Georgg. Ritterfest. Ich werde aber nicht ermangeln mich nach den bestehenden Statuten am Tage selbst durch den Großkanzler des Georgg. Ordens (...) noch entschuldigen zu lassen (...)"

"My profound mourning, which I do not wear alone on the outside, but feel even more deeply in my heart, does not permit me to attend the church celebrations at court during the Holy Week, nor to appear on Easter Sunday. I therefore ask you to release me from this, as well as from the upcoming Georgg. Knights Festival. But I will not lack, according to the existing statutes, to be excused on the day itself by the Grand Chancellor of the Georgg. Order (...)"
