Julie was the youngest of four siblings and was the only one to pursue a career in the arts.

At the age of 12, Julie debuted on the London stage in the musical, "Starlight Roof", and she soon became a regular performer on the West End stage. She also made her film debut at the age of 15 in the movie "The Americanization of Emily".

In 1964, Julie landed the role of Maria von Trapp in the movie adaptation of the musical "The Sound of Music". Her performance earned her both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
